BALAU – Shorea spp.
South East Asia.
A very dense and durable timber. Commonly used for Decking. The wood is light brown to yellowish light brown in colour which will gradually turn dark brown over time. Rarely necessary to stain. Difficult to work because so dense. Be aware of small holes referred to as “pin holes”. When freshly felled the logs are commonly attacked by the Pinhole Borer Beetle. This is a unique characteristic of Balau and does not affect the strength in any way.
