American Black Walnut

Richly coloured and fine-textured, ideal for decorative joinery

Product Details

American Black Walnut, known scientifically as Juglans nigra, originates from North America. (Note: The name “Black” refers to the tree and not the colour of the timber boards). The heartwood is generally a rich chocolate-brown. The sapwood can be very pale and distinct from the heartwood, which often doesn’t manifest until after machining.
The wood has a fine, even texture and a rather coarse grain. Note that sapwood and occasional knots are permissible within the grading – particularly on one face and edges. We stock Prime grade to reduce Sapwood proportions, but this should be taken into account when ordering. Widths 200mm+ and lengths 3.0m+ are rare.
Good – Works easily and well with both hand and machine tools. It is suitable for hand carving and for turnery, finishing cleanly from the tool. It can be glued satisfactorily and takes an excellent polish.
American Black Walnut is moderately durable, making it suitable for interior applications.
