European Beech, known scientifically as Fagus sylvatica, typically exhibits no clear distinction between sapwood and heartwood. The wood is very pale brown when freshly cut, turning reddish-brown upon exposure, and deep reddish-brown following the steaming treatment commonly applied in parts of the Continent before shipment.

Some logs show an irregular dark reddish-coloured kern or heart, caused by severe frosts, occurring more frequently in Continental beech. The wood is typically straight-grained with a fine, even texture, but its density and hardness can vary according to the locality of growth. European Beech works fairly readily, producing a smooth surface. It turns well, takes glue readily, and can be stained and polished satisfactorily, making it excellent for veneer.

This timber is non-durable and best suited for interior applications.

Note: Stock is usually lightly sanded, so will tend to be 3-4mm under stated thicknesses.
