Pippy Oak, sometimes called ‘cat’s paw’ oak, is characterised by frequent small knots and knot clusters peppering the board. Large knot clusters are generally referred to as ‘burrs’, and boards with a high proportion of these large clusters are described as burr oak.
The distinctive appearance of Pippy Oak makes it highly sought after for decorative applications. It has a unique character due to the frequent small knots and clusters, making each piece unique.
Good – Pippy Oak works well with both hand and machine tools, although care is needed due to the presence of knots.
