The heartwood is light reddish-brown in colour, distinct from the lighter-coloured sapwood. The abrupt change and contrast in colour between early-wood and late-wood bands produce a prominent growth ring figure, which is a feature of plain-sawn surfaces and rotary-cut veneer. It is generally easy to work with when green, although knots, especially loose ones, can be problematic when cutting joints. Knots can become loose as the wood dries out.
